about lach

Meet Lach, a man of many talents and the creative force often hailed as the "Punk Rock Rimbaud" and the "Godfather of Antifolk." Beyond pioneering the Antifolk music movement, Lach is also a songwriter, author, comedian, poet, and even the writer and star of his own BBC Radio Four hit comedy series, "The Lach Chronicles." Born in Brooklyn, New York, Lach was a non-conformist, creative genius from the get-go, memorizing Bach on piano and creating his own songs at the age of six. As a young adult he moved to the East Village, where he founded a community of artists, musicians, and rule-breakers that resonated with his own rebellious spirit which he dubbed “Antifolk”. During this time, Lach created The Antihoot, NYC’s longest running open mic night at the Sidewalk Café that became the epicentre of the Antifolk movement. This wasn't your run-of-the-mill open mic; it was a hotbed for raw talent, birthing the careers of such artists as Beck, Regina Spektor, The Moldy Peaches and hundreds more, creating legendary nights attended by everyone from Bob Dylan (who said, “Lach is great!”) to Meryl Streep (who called Lach “Fabulous!”).

Antifolk

“Hey there, you curious cats! So, you wanna know about Antifolk, huh? Well, sit tight, 'cause I've got a tale for ya. Picture this: New York City, 1980s. Folk music's all the rage, but it's gotten a bit "stuffy." Enter yours truly. I loved punk, and played the piano. I didn’t fit in. And the folk clubs in Greenwich Village? Man, they couldn't handle me. So, what's a guy to do? Well, I started my own scene. I opened The Fort, an underground haven for all us misfits who didn't fit the folkie mould. We had our own Antifolk Festival, an underground rebellion to the mainstream New York Folk Festival. And let me tell ya, The Fort was the launchpad for some of the biggest names in music. Man, I got so many stories to tell....”
